where new york city has now canceled the marathon. that's one of the biggest sporting events of the year but at least 41 new yorkers died in the super symptoms, and nearly half of them on statten island. hundreds need food and water, and they say help just isn't coming fast enough. >> reporter: the new york city marathon is the latest victim of superstorm sandy. the city canceled after public backlash. some complained the marathon would take police away from areas still recovering from the storm. the mayor issued a statement saying we cannot allow controversy over an athletic event to distract attention away from the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm. many of those affect agreed. >> life changes. you can't -- sometimes you've got to cancel things. there was no halloween. >> reporter: sandy's force is very visible on steapt island where the marathon was supposed

to start. in gray kills harbor, boats are piled on top of each other. homes are boarded up, some with signs begging for help. >> we've been completely devastated. >> reporter: hundreds are suffering. they say the city, state, and federal government is ignoring them. >> no one has really been here to help us. we need help. >> reporter: this distribution site in staten island relies on donations and people bringing in everything from clothes to blankets to much needed food. in manhattan, gas lines stretch for blocks for cars and containers. >> you've got get gas, you've got to wait, right? >> reporter: but there is some good news for drivers. the holland tunnel has reopened for commercial vehicles and buses. cbs news, staten island, new york. now a bit more on that canceled marathon. the folks who were helping with the race have shifted their focus. now they're helping out of town runners who no longer need their hotel rooms to donate

danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: 14-year-old devon is here for his weekly weigh- in. devon has struggled with his weight since he was a toddler and today he's battling high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and prediabetes. >> i wouldn't do as much. i would stay home and play games and not do things with my friends and things. >> reporter: but devon is working to turn his life around with doctor, nutritionists, and more. >> it's not just about johnny has a weight issue. it's about changing the behaviors of the family. >> the weigh smart program is 10 weeks of exercise and education at that time hospital's facilities. the program is so popular, there aren't any open spots for new patients until february of next year. >> our kids are the first generation of kids that may not outlive their parents because of obesity. >> what's your favorite? >> reporter: did he slip's
